Imagine if Grýla really were real.
And imagine hearing the story of her in verse, as though it's a happy Christmas poem that bubbles and rhymes like a nursery tale. You might laugh, though you're not quite sure you should be laughing. You might cringe a little, at the same time. And even if the story seems a bit too familiar, you might doubt the truth, until the very last word.
I discovered Grýla late in life. For a couple of years, I didn't know what to do with her. I came to Iceland, to learn about her. And gradually, the fog of legend dissipated: Imagine if she were real.
I hope to take you to your childhood, your innocence, your memories, and your mistakes. The telling is still taking shape. Grýla herself is coming in from the mist. So is her nemesis, the village priest. And between the two of them, there is only mystery.
